Auger/Mud Rotary Geotechnical Drilling Assistant

Overview

Innovative, dynamic consulting engineering and construction management firm looking to fill a Geotechnical Drilling Assistant position. The successful candidate will travel to different work sites, primarily NY and NJ, but will be willing to travel to surrounding states if needed. The Drilling Assistant will assist Drill Operator during drilling operations. In addition, the Drilling Assistant will assist as necessary in the mobilization and demobilization for projects in both the field and the shop. Furthermore, the drilling assistant will be responsible for the learning process of the drill rig and operation with the goal of eventually becoming a drill operator.

This position will be primarily in the field on a project site and the Drilling Assistant will be expected to perform work year round, in varying weather conditions that may be wet, cold or hot. The Drilling Assistant will have to carry equipment and lift heavy objects. Depending on workload and client demand, this position may be required to work nights and weekends.  

Responsibilities

  • Assist drill operation as needed or as directed by Drill Operator  
  • Assist in maintaining the drill rig and monitor throughout operations in order to optimize good working condition.
  • Assist with job-required paperwork including: tailboards, safety documentation, system startup and abandonment documentation, equipment condition documentation, etc.
  • Follow all protocols and procedures to guarantee safety and compliance on the job site and keep team members safe from injury.
  • Position and assemble casing pipes, augers, drill rods, split spoons, and other drilling support equipment.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor and coworkers.
  • General maintenance/upkeep of the drill rig and update the shop as to when the drill rig requires shop maintenance.
  • Follow specific instructions and carry out tasks in a safe manner.
  • Monitor safety and regulatory compliance to ensure compliance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations. Develop a full understanding of MFS’ safety policies and procedures and help promote our safety culture.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices on field operations and shop area.
  • Assist with pre-shift and post-shift safety inspections and daily equipment inspection reports.
  • Able to perform minor repairs and service to equipment.

Physical Demands

  • Able to lift 75 pounds
  • Can expect to work with hand tools and some chemicals for drilling
  • Being on call and available to work at any time the customer requires
  • Able to load, unload, and move large equipment, materials and tools
  • Continuous walking, stair climbing, and lifting
  • Full range of physical motions associated with general labor work
  • Continual exposure to all outdoor weather conditions (extreme heat and cold); exposure to noise and fumes generated from motorized equipment

Experience

  • Previous 1-3 years of experience as a Drilling Assistant or Geotechnical experience
  • Minimum High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Company background check
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Must have reliable transportation to the office and project site
  • Must be willing to travel within NJ, NY, and adjoining states
  • Motivated and excited to grow with a small firm and the potential to advance with the company
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers, clients, and contractors

Preferences

  • Mechanical skills and construction background
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER and OSHA 10/30 training
  • Interest in obtaining NJ state drilling licenses
  • Welding experience
  • TWIC card
