Health and Safety Officer

Overview

Seeking a Health and Safety Officer. The Health and Safety Officer works directly with Project Managers and Contractors to maintain a safe and healthy environment on a project. The candidate will be part of an on-site project management team and will support the implementation of the Project Health & Safety Program.

This position is responsible for providing technical leadership, draft the necessary reports to federal and local agencies, coordinate audits of health and safety programs, and communicates programs to enhance employee awareness of prevention and compliance.

Must be willing to travel within Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Caribbean (St. Thomas and St. Croix).

As this is a field position, you will be expected to perform work year round, in varying weather conditions that may be wet, cold or hot. You may be required to work nights and weekends.

This position is temporary. The approximate duration is one year, but this is based on specific project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Project Manager in performing to ensure field safety at the jobsite.
  • Support the Project Manager in the development and implementation of project health and safety program in accordance with the USACE expectations, policies and procedures.
  • Administer the Site Health and Safety Program and advises the Project Manager with regard to all matters of health and safety associated with the project.
  • Provides Leadership for all safety personnel assigned to project.
  • Provides orientation to all personnel and subcontractors working on the project.
  • Complies with safety procedures/policies and addresses and/or elevates non-compliance among all employees, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Will serve as safety and health competent person as defined by OSHA standard.
  • Documents all health and safety operations and reconciles with the employees on a daily basis.
  • Take site walks to communicate with Foreman, Superintendents and Employees about current operation safety standards.
  • Ensures that projects are safely constructed.
  • Establishes excellent working and professional relationships.
  • Reports and documents findings and issues related to site safety.
  • Coordinates daily site wide tasks with Project Supervisors addressing safety concerns and resolutions.
  • Supervises all site-monitoring activities.
  • Ensures all training for site is accomplished and current.
  • Review and assist with preparation of AHAs.

  • Occasionally required to lift and carry items up to 25 pounds
  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions
  • Occasionally work near moving mechanical parts
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, or kneel
  • Occasionally work near loud noise or very loud noise

Experience

  • Associates Degree
  • OSHA 30 Hours certification within the last 5 years
  • At least 5 years of continued construction safety experience
  • Must have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills
  • Excellent teamwork, communication and people skills a must
  • Self-directed, organized and self-motivated to accomplish goals
  • Able to multitask and work in a fast paced challenging environment
  • Solid time management and demonstrates excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability and desire to learn and progress within the organization
  • Must be willing to travel within Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Caribbean
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Certificate of Good Conduct required
