Survey Technician

South Plainfield, New Jersey


This position is based in our South Plainfield, NJ office and requires tasks associated with reviewing, processing survey data to create drawings of surveys. Knowledge and ability to use and process data in a manner acceptable for field to finish procedures is highly desirable. The ideal candidate for this position should have prior field experience and be willing to perform field surveys as needed, from time to time functioning as a party chief or instrument operator in a one or two man crew. Successful candidate must have valid driver’s license and must be physically capable and willing to work outdoors for the full day, in any environment/condition, at any time of day, throughout the entire year, at any location served (now or in the future) by MFS.


  • Daily processing and filing of survey data files, field notes, photos, sketches.
  • Perform CAD work to create and finalize survey drawings.
  • Use Excel and other survey programs to process, verify data, and run reports.
  • Perform daily downloads of data collector files.
  • Adhere to company standards, protocols for maintenance and upkeep of survey equipment and vehicles.
  • Interface and report to MFS’ Principal Land Surveyor or project managers as assigned to a project.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • The employee must be able to lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to drive to job sites and comfortably over-see projects at those job site which includes mobility once at the job-site


  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a survey technician.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D. 
  • Experience with Microstation is a plus.
  • Experience with field to finish procedures and methods.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with processing GPS data.  Prior use of Leica LGO is a plus.
  • Wide range of experience in topographic/boundary survey and construction layout.  
  • Structural monitoring is a plus.
  • Ability to react positively to difficult project assignments and/or client representatives.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, yet follow defined procedures within reason.
  • Experience as a party chief or instrument operator and willing to perform field work as needed is a plus.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, and have a clean driving record.
  • Must be willing to travel within NJ and adjoining states.
  • Desire to pursue a career in Land Surveying, as witnessed through current degreed program in survey or having attained LSIT is a plus.
