Project Overview

MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided geotechnical engineering services in support of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Cloudburst Infrastructure Design Services project at the Butler Houses and Woodside Houses located in the boroughs of the Bronx and Queens, New York, respectively. The project aimed to address critical stormwater management and infrastructure challenges across these sites.

Project Details

Prior to mobilizing for the subsurface investigation, MFS performed a literature review by reviewing all available project information, including geologic publications, historic topographic maps, and historic land use. In addition, MFS coordinated with a trusted subcontractor to conduct a private utility mark out utilizing ground penetrating radar (GPR) methodologies in the vicinity of the proposed boring and permeability test locations at the project site.

MFS coordinated with a trusted subcontractor drilling agency to conduct four test borings at the Butler Houses and six test borings at the Woodside Houses for a total of ten test borings. Each test boring was conducted to a depth of 15 feet below existing site grade, with soil samples taken via Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) continuously from a depth of 1 foot below grade to the respective boring termination depth. Permeability tests were conducted at depths of 3 feet, 5 feet, and 10 feet below grade in adjacent boreholes to each completed boring location in accordance with Appendix F of the NYC Green Infrastructure On-Site Design Manual.

MFS provided on-site, full-time oversight during the subsurface field investigation for the project. During boring operations, MFS observed the subsurface conditions and generated test boring logs to include soil classifications in accordance with the United Soil Classification System (USCS) and the New York City Building Code (NYCBC), groundwater observations, action of equipment, and other noteworthy observations. During the permeability testing, MFS conducted the testing and recorded the drop in water at specified intervals to determine the permeability rates of the soils. The data recorded was entered into the NYC Green Infrastructure permeability test log templates along with other noteworthy observations.

Upon completion of the field investigation, MFS coordinated with an accredited geotechnical testing laboratory to conduct laboratory testing on select, soil samples to verify field classifications and obtain geotechnical physical characteristics. The laboratory testing conducted on soil samples included moisture content and sieve and hydrometer analyses.

The results of the field investigations and laboratory testing were compiled and presented in a written Geotechnical Data Report for each separate project site. The reports included a detailed summary of the field methods used as well as final typed boring logs, permeability
