Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyors, DPC (MFS) was contracted by Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, PLLC (MRCE) to provide geotechnical engineering and instrumentation services for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Construction and Development (MTA C&D) East Side Access (CH058B) project located in Queens, New York.

Project Details

MFS provided instrumentation equipment and on-site, full-time special inspections during the subsurface field investigation, which included 12 geotechnical test borings to depths ranging from 35 to 85 feet below the existing site grade. As part of the instrumentation scope, MFS installed four deep benchmarks (approximately 90 feet deep), eight open standpipe piezometers (approximately 30 feet deep), nine inclinometer casings (approximately 75 feet deep), and 17 surface monitoring points.

MFS documented subsurface conditions through handwritten test boring logs, which included soil classifications in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and the New York City Building Code. The logs also recorded groundwater levels, equipment activity, borehole and sample diameters, drilling depths, changes in sampling methods or equipment, blow counts, total depth of penetration, and types of sampling. Additional notes included the make and model of the drilling equipment, drilling methods, date and time of drilling, casing used, and any observed conditions such as heaving, loss of circulation, or voids.
