Middlesex Co. Design of Multi-Use Paths at Thompson Park, Monroe Township

Thompson Park, Monroe Turnpike, New Jersey

Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyor, DPC (MFS) provided professional land surveying services in support of the Middlesex County MON8025 project, the design of multi-use paths located within Thompson Park. These services included establishing survey control, conducting a topographic survey with cross sections of the proposed path route, preparing base mapping at a scale of 1” =30’ with 1’ contours in AutoCAD Civil 3D and preparing digital tie sketches of the survey control in CADD.

Project Details

MFS utilized GNSS RTN and Leica SmartNet to establish primary horizontal and vertical survey control pairs for the project. A secondary traverse baseline was established along the proposed path route using the primary survey control pairs. Differential leveling was performed, incorporating the primary and secondary survey control points using the primary control pairs as reference benchmarks. The horizontal control was tied to the New Jersey State Plane Coordinate System, North American Datum (NAD 1983), US Survey Feet. The vertical datum was tied to the North American Vertical Datum (NAVD 1988). All survey efforts were overseen by a Licensed Land Surveyor in the State of New Jersey.

MFS obtained cross-sectional data along the proposed path route. Cross sections were taken at approximately 25-foot intervals. At the pathways adjacent to existing roadways, the cross sections extended approximately 50 feet from the centerline of the roadway. At the pathway adjacent to Lake Manalapan, the cross sections extended approximately 25 feet from the centerline of the path (50 feet total). Additional cross sections were taken at high/low points and driveways within the survey corridor. The cross sections included key breakline features (such as top/bottom curbs, crown of the road, driveway edge, etc.) in addition to random spot elevations. The survey also included accessible and visible manmade surface features such as buildings, surface utility hardware, striping, fences, walls, utility/light poles, and signs. MFS established rim/grate elevations on sanitary and drainage structures. Invert measurements were taken and recorded, along with pipe types and sizes, without entering any structures. Pipe connections were made based on field crew observations of apparent direction of pipe into structures and office review of data and available utility record comparisons. Individual ornamental trees were surveyed and noted as either deciduous or coniferous, with tree diameters measured at diameter breast height (DBH).
