Project Details

MFS performed a subsurface utility investigation to demarcate existing utilities located within the parcel.

MFS deployed the latest Sensors & Software Smart Cart and Utility Scan DF GPR systems. Smart Cart had two antenna configurations for shallow and deep penetration: 400 MHz and 270 MHz respectively. The Utility Scan DF had dual-frequency antennas at 300 and 800 MHz. Each had an integrated onboard computer providing real-time utility location information (including depth). Data could be stored in digital files for paper printouts if needed. Eight-hour battery life and a backup battery allowed for uninterrupted surveys. GPR was a proven technology for identifying non-metallic and metallic pipes, objects, and features. GPR could also be used for detecting voids, tanks, and rebar.

MFS deployed Metrotech VLoc2 Pro, RD8000, Metrotech 810, 9800 and 9890, and Pipehorn 800 H.L., pipe and cable locating instruments. This equipment relied on sending a radio signal into the ground or directly onto the buried asset itself to locate the whereabouts of metallic-based pipes and cables. Once the utility was identified by a tone on the receiver, its path could be followed using conventional location techniques. The depth of the buried asset could be determined by a depth readout feature on the instrument or by using a triangulation technique. MFS deployed a full range of locators from a variety of manufacturers operating on low, medium, and high frequencies for full coverage.

MFS utilized EM Scope and GPR to mark all found utilities within the project limits.

A topographic survey was also performed. The survey included all visible and accessible surface utility hardware (e.g., valves, manholes, inlets, utility poles, etc.) in addition to fencing, buildings, walls, pavement limits, etc. The subsurface utility mark out was observed. At drainage and sanitary structures, MFS obtained rim/grate elevations. Invert information was collected to include pipe depths, size, and material. Connections were made to the best of our ability. Additionally, MFS observed key ground surface features (e.g., top/bottom banks, swales, ditches, curbs, etc.) in addition to random spot elevations.

Mapping was prepared in ACAD C3D V2018 with 1’ contours utilizing MFS current CAD specs. The mapping included the parcel boundary with topographic and subsurface utility information.
