Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyor, DPC (MFS) provided professional land surveying services in support of the installation of electric vehicle charging stations at Newark Airport’s Fuel Farm.

Project Details

MFS performed a field survey to locate apparent above ground physical features, including buildings, curbs, pavement edges, drives, striping, sidewalks, fences, walls, utility/light poles, street trees, tree lines, and street furniture. Features under raised structures, including bridges, were surveyed, encompassing roadway features. Breakline features like curb edges and pavement edges were located. Cellar, vault, and roof surveys were not included in this proposal.

MFS located surface utilities such as manholes, catch basins, headwalls, valve covers, utility/light poles, hydrants, etc. For storm drains and sanitary sewers, MFS obtained measurements to determine inverts and pipe sizes at accessible manholes and catch basins. Horizontal locations of subsurface utilities such as steam, water, gas, electric and communication were depicted based on surface features and mark out of subsurface utilities.

MFS provided Subsurface Utility Engineering services for the project. In addressing the challenges of utility location surveys, GEOD utilized a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electro-Magnetic (EM) Pipe/Cable Locator technology. The GPR system employed included Sensors & Software Smart Cart and Utility Scan DF, featuring multiple antenna configurations for various depths and integrated onboard computers for real-time data collection. GPR proved effective in identifying both metallic and non-metallic pipes, as well as voids and other features. For EM locating, GEOD deployed a range of instruments from various manufacturers, allowing for precise detection of metallic pipes and cables. This approach aimed to maximize information while minimizing errors, ensuring thorough and accurate surveys.
