SCDPW SCSD No. 6 Kings Park Smithtown Downtown Sewers

Smithtown, New York

Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyor, DPC (MFS) provided geotechnical engineering and structural engineering services in support of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works (SCDPW) – Suffolk Counter Sewer District (SCSD) No. 6 Kings Park Smithtown Downtown Sewers project located in Kings Park and Smithtown, New York. The project consisted of the installation of a collection system of the Smithtown Downtown area up to 0.6 million gallons per day (MGD). The new collection system will convey flow to an existing pump station no. 3 that will be upgraded to handle the expanded capacity. In addition, new process tanks and buildings will be installed along with upsizing existing equipment for the expansion. Recharge basins on the Kings Park Psych Center will be constructed to dispose of the new 0.6 MGD treated effluent to the groundwater.

Project Details

MFS coordinated with our trusted drilling agency to drill five test borings at the project sites: one for the pump station no. 3 upgrade and four for the sewage treatment plant expansion. The borings were conducted to depths between 22 and 37 feet below existing site grade. During the test boring operations, MFS observed the subsurface conditions and generated test boring logs to include soil classifications in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), standard penetration test results, action of equipment, and other noteworthy observations.

Following the field investigation, laboratory tests were performed to verify soil classifications and obtain geotechnical physical characteristics for soils. The results of the field investigation and laboratory testing program, evaluation of the subsurface conditions, and our geotechnical engineering recommendations were presented in a written geotechnical engineering report. The geotechnical engineering report included design and construction recommendations for the various site improvements.

MFS’ structural team developed the analysis and design for the structural components for both the Kings Park Pump Station Expansion and Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion. At the Kings Park Pump Station Upgrade, MFS provided the structural and foundation designs for the structural components, which included three concrete valve vaults and one wet well, Control Building superstructure and foundation, and one emergency generator pad. At the Sewage Treatment Plant expansion, MFS provided the structural and foundation designs for the structural components, which included a one-story masonry Headworks Building superstructure and foundation with influent and effluent channels below the building slab, foundation design for two concrete SBR Tanks with a footprint of 76’x120’, various size concrete valve vaults and wet wells, a one-story masonry Filter and UV Disinfection Building superstructure and foundation, and a one-story masonry Sludge Dewatering Building superstructure and foundation.
