Columbia County, New York

Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyor, DPC provided professional geotechnical engineering services for MKM Landscape Architecture PC in support of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association - Design for Harlem Valley Rail Trail, Chatham to Philmont project in Columbia County, New York. The project consisted of the construction of an approximately 8-mile section of trail from the Town of Chatham to the Village of Philmont in Columbia County, New York. The 8-mile trail section includes state owned land and rail bed administered by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The trail route includes four bridge/culvert crossings. Each of the bridges/culverts required restoration or complete reconstruction to be used by the public.

Project Details

MFS coordinated with our trusted drilling agency to drill two (2) soil borings at the North Creek Tributary Bridge location, with one (1) boring conducted at each abutment and one (1) boring at the Klein Kill Bridge. Each of the borings were conducted to depths of 27 to 31 feet below existing site grade. MFS obtained samples continuously in the upper 12 feet and at five-foot intervals thereafter in each of the borings conducted on site.

During the test boring operations, MFS observed the subsurface conditions and generated test boring logs to include soil classifications in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), Standard Penetration Test results, and other relevant information. Upon completion of the field investigation, laboratory tests were performed to verify soil classifications and obtain geotechnical physical characteristics for soils. The results of the field investigation and laboratory testing program, evaluation of the subsurface conditions, and our geotechnical engineering recommendations were presented in a written geotechnical engineering report. The geotechnical engineering report included design and construction recommendations for the respective bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
